CAVITIES & FILLINGS
Cavities can become extremely painful to the point where they distract you from work or you everyday life. We understand many patients with cavities don’t see a dentist immediately because it’s inconvenient or they don’t have someone to go to in the city.
20 Finch Dental is a silver/mercury/amalgam-free practice. Although many patients have these types of fillings, they are not particularly attractive. Silver fillings can sometimes lead to fracturing over time, however porcelain fillings can add strength to weakened teeth. Porcelain inlays/onlays and direct/indirect composites are almost unnoticeable in the mouth. Also, they are very strong due to the advanced bonding techniques used in manufacturing.
-
Porcelain, or composite resin restorations can be formulated to match the true color of the rest of your teeth for a natural appearance. Resin fillings bond to teeth, unlike silver fillings, where the tooth is cut to create a uniformed fit.
Long-lasting solution – It can last as long as 10 to 15 years, with proper upkeep.
Natural-looking results – Porcelain products are specially made to match your natural tooth color.
Customized for your smile – Impressions of your teeth are used to hand-craft and fit your individual tooth.
Quick, simple procedure – Typically placement of the porcelain veneers can be complete within in two visits. Porcelain has high strength and durability allowing you to enjoy your food longer and better.
Stain-resistant – Porcelain is resistant to staining, unlike natural teeth. You can maintain brilliant pearly whites, while still enjoying coffee, tea, and other products that normally cause staining of the teeth.
Cosmetic benefits – Porcelain helps improve teeth that are cracked, chipped, broken, badly discolored.
Can be combined with other treatments – Tooth whitening treatment as a finishing touch to your new, gorgeous smile.

Direct fillings are placed into a prepared cavity in just one visit. We will prepare the tooth by removing all decay and traces of bacteria inside the cavity. The tooth will then be thoroughly rinsed and cleared of all debris before the filling material is placed inside the cavity and shaped to match the look and feel of your surrounding teeth. The materials commonly used for direct fillings include resin ionomers, composite or resin, or glass ionomers.
-
This type of filling typically requires two or more visits. Types of indirect fillings include veneers, crowns, inlays, onlays and bridges that are made with composites, ceramics, metal alloys, or gold. During your first visit, we will remove the decay and prepare the tooth for the additional work by making an impression of the tooth. A temporary covering will be placed on the tooth while the impression is sent to a lab to create your custom dental restoration. During your second appointment with us, this prosthetic piece is placed on your tooth or teeth and adjusted for the right final look and feel.
Fillings are a common dental treatment that can help prevent further damage to a tooth or help you achieve a more attractive smile. If you are in need of a dental filling or a routine checkup to detect cavities or other dental problems, contact our office today to schedule your next appointment.
We offer local and topical anesthesia for cavity care to keep our patients comfortable.
PREVENTIVE RESIN RESTORATION
The etched resin techniques have proven results which has shown renewed interest in the conservative cavity design along with a view for the healthy tooth material preservation.
Preventive resin restorations are among the newer techniques which show long-term success. This treatment of resin restoration has various distinct advantages over the traditional amalgam restorations. But, it requires an excellent isolation of moisture and saliva contamination.
-
A recent medication is done in the restoration procedure. With the advent of newer restorative materials the ideology of sealing for prevention of fissure caries rather than ‘the cavity extension for prevention’ came into practice.
Preventive restorations are the next step up from a sealant. These restorations are recommended when there are stains in the pits of teeth or the beginnings of decay. These restorations are in between a sealant and a filling. Some tooth structure is drilled away, but not as much as would be for a filling. Sometimes these preventive restorations are recommended when there has been tooth breakdown around a sealant (which can happen). Preventive restorations can help prevent the need for a larger filling down the road.
Preventive resin restoration utilizes the invasive and non-invasive treatment of borderline or questionable caries. The resin placed in the carious areas and adjacent caries susceptible areas, seal them from the oral environment and provide a valuable treatment alternative to conventional restoration like amalgams.
-
Minimal cavity preparation required thus prevents unnecessary removal of healthy tooth structure for retention.
Seals caries thereby halting the destruction of tooth. For example, teeth pit and fissure, dens evaginatus.
Loss of the restoration and subsequent replacement proves to be less invasive than that for conventional restoration like amalgam
ROOT CANALS
A root canal is one of the most common dental procedures. A root canal can save your natural tooth and prevent extraction.
-
Your dentist will perform a root canal when the root of your tooth becomes infected. Infection of the root, if left untreated, can cause deep decay, cracks and long-term damage. If you experience tooth pain and discomfort and have trouble chewing, a root canal may be needed. During a root canal procedure, your dentist will remove the infected, or dead root (pulp) from your tooth. First you will receive a local anesthetic, then your dentist will remove the infected area by creating an opening in the tooth. Once cleaned, your dentist will fill and seal the tooth with a filling. The tooth may also require a crown to help bring it back to normal form and function.iption text goes here
-
Teeth that need root canal therapy are infected in the pulp—a collection of blood vessels in the center of every tooth that support it. Most patients with infections first realize it when they have sensitivity to temperature, pain in the specific tooth or gums, or visible injury with swelling.
-
During the treatment, we will remove the infected parts, clean out the tooth, and seal it with high-quality materials that match your tooth and bite.
-
Root canal therapies used to be more painful than they are today. With the advent of new imaging technology, we can see the exact trouble-spots and direct our cleaning efforts with immense precision. We also offer local anesthesia and nitrous oxide to make patients as comfortable as possible.
Root canal treatment is the process of accessing the pulp space and removing the infected dead tissue. The space is then shaped, disinfected and sealed with special materials. Nowadays, root canal treatments are performed with advanced techniques and materials, making them far more comfortable and faster. After root canal treatment is complete, your restorative dentist will usually place a crown on your tooth to safeguard against fracture.
